Besides the Z3 not behaving well in the cold (and getting thoroughly beat up), my commute will be jumping from 10 minutes to 30 in the near future. I also want something with a bit more space to haul people and/or crap if need be.
Budget is around $3,000, preferably less. I’ve been looking at 1st gen CRVs and the like, but this ‘97 Ranger has piqued my interest as well. I figure I could load it up with sandbags in the winter and be fine.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I probably won’t pull the trigger on this one. But in general, am I crazy for wanting to commute in something this (90% highway miles)? The Vulcan V6 is not exactly a gas saver, but should be reliable and not terrible on fuel.

Honest advice? Any car with good winter tires. Drove my Fiesta ST all winter with WS80s on it. In rural Saskatchewan. Never got stuck, worked the whole winter. Buy something in your price range you like and spend the rest on tires.

You’ll need more than a few sandbags with that Ranger. We routinely had to have people help us push ours out of intersections during ice storms, even with four people in the back (dumb kid shit, oh well).
My ‘89 Toyota pickup did fantastic in the snow because 1) I was no longer a dumb kid but a dumb adult, 2) new tires, 3) better center of gravity than the stock RWD ranger, and 4) about 300 pounds of expired boxed mastic over my rear axle.
Ultimately, I agree with CB. Tires, responsible driving, and a little weight.
If you don't have hills like we do here, all the better. If you do, I'm gonna recommend FWD.

That’s true, I figure if I could make it around in the Z then most anything else would be fine. I just want to quit putting hard miles on it.

I’d recommend a Mazda 3 since everyone in Quebec has one, but that’s only if you like tinworm.

My B3000 (Mazda version of the Ranger with the 3.0) made it to 269k miles before I put it out to pasture. It was still going strong, but I figured 18 years of the same truck was long enough.

I mean, I’d rather have a Taco of the same era , but they’ve held value disappointingly well.

Get a Ranger! Get a Ranger! I'll even let you drive mine and/or go with you to look at one. They're stupidly addictive trucks!

That’s a weird way to spell peeked.
Also Toyota Corolla.
In all seriousness if I had 3k to spend on a beater I’d get a... what ever looked fun for that price lol

That’s the correct way to use piqued in this circumstance. Peeked and peaked are both wrong.

I pretty much never hear anything bad about them. I’ve always liked trucks and I do prefer the small tidy ones over the RAMs and Silverado I’ve driven.

I have a couple Ranger experts as friends. lol
I’d stay away from the Vulcan V6** if you can and if you want something really future -proof, get a manual. The autos are reliable too , but when they do go south they can go south fast.
**The Vulcans can have a tendency to eat gaskets if neglected . The 4 cyl and the 4.0 V6 can basically take all the abuse and still run. The Vulcan also only has marginally more power than the 4 cyl with nearly the fuel consumption of the 4.0.

Thanks for the heads up about the head gaskets. I’d ideally want a 4 banger since I’m not trying to tow anything.

The other half is gratuitous displays of violence.

That’s pretty much what I hear about them , and what I’m hoping for as I’ve spent a lot of monies on the Z3 recently.

It’s true. Keep it slow and you’ll get 20 mpg or more. I never got below 18.

It’s probably over budget and a better car than what you need, but why not an AWD Suzuki Kizashi? It’s pretty oppo.

For context, I drove this particular car through snow that was halfway up the doors when I got into it, but it managed to power out of the fucked up parking lot no problem.
2009 Hyundai Accent sedan with Blizzaks.
Not enough power to spin the wheels too much, enough power to crawl or smash your way through deep powder, and it’s cheap as fuck to run in terms of tires, oil, and gas.
It’s also a piece of shit, so you won’t worry about the salt fucking it up or banging a wheel against a snow-covered kerb or about anything that happens to it.
Basically, you could get a weak FWD shite and it’ll probably be fine with good tires.

I’d b uy a Corolla or a Civic (if the civic is manual). I can personally vouch for a 2005 Corolla automatic. I had one and at 160,000 miles it was still in good condition. It also took a work van running a red and tboning me at 50MPH and I walked away with only a concussion, a sprained back and neck and some cuts from the glass. For the impact speed I considered that good. A Matrix or especially a Pontiac Vibe (both the same car) would probably be better with the extra hatch room and cheaper in the case if he Pontiac.

Not a fan of 2wd trucks in the winter. It ices in Cincinnati and the amount 2wd trucks is crazy. And I cant count the amount of trucks having to turn around because they cant go uphill. Even have a video of a salt truck stuck on a hill
Crv could be good
Also was going to suggest an v6 accord coupe manual or manual tl but damn is st Louis stuff is expensive

2.2 subie legacy wagon. If you can find one that keeps your feet dry. It’s a never breaking Volvo in spirit. Now if not, I second winter tires. A fwd winter tire car will out snowhill an all season shod Subaru . Our old rav4 was fwd and awesome and with snows was unbeatable. That said, any Toyota from mid 00's is super. Holds value unfortunately.
